Since 1926, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has produced lawn fertilizer from the biosolids - or sludge - created as a result of the water reclamation process. It is one of the largest, longest running and most successful recycling programs in the US.
The fertilizer is called Milorganite© which stands for “Milwaukee Organic Nitrogen” and is an environmentally friendly way to dispose of this material. This biosolid fertilizer is composed of heat-dried microbes or the bugs that have digested the organic matter from the wastewater.
"The bugs we use for cleaning wastewater are actually famous! When they're done doing their jobs in the water reclamation facilities, we dry them out and turn them into Milorganite®, a fertilizer trusted by lawn and gardening experts for more than 90 years. You can even see Milorganite® in the movie Caddyshack."
